Beautify a Blank Wall
SEASON: Early Summer
CONCEPT: Handsome plants arrayed against a blank wall make a picture that pleases year-round.
Just as you can enhance a wall in your home with a painting, you can decorate a blank wall outdoors with plants. The design shown here transforms a nondescript front entrance by showcasing perennials, shrubs, and vines against an adjacent garage wall. Such entrances are common in suburban homes, but a vertical garden like this is also ideal for other spots where yard space is limited.
Selected for a sunny site, these plants offer something in every season. There are flowers spring through fall, and evergreen shrubs provide fresh-looking foliage year-round. The garden is at its flowering peak in early and midsummer, with blooms in yellow, blue, purple, and red. The flowers and foliage of the two lavenders offer fragrance as well. Two trellises laden with clematis flowers draw the eye upward, making a canvas of an otherwise blank wall. When flowers fade, the planting’s varied foliage colors, shapes, and textures provide interest on the walk to the front door.
Plants and Projects
Once established, these plants require little more than seasonal maintenance. As they mature, the shrubs will need to be pruned to limit their size. In late fall, cut down the perennials along the walk to keep the bed tidy. Or, instead, let the escallonia expand to displace the perennials and fill their space during the winter.
