Get To Know Fuchsias
WITH A LITTLE LOVE, YOUR FUCHSIA WILL BLOOM THROUGH SUMMER & CAN BE OVERWINTERED TO ENJOY NEXT YEAR!
Where should I put it?
- Hang in a semi-sunny area away from direct sunshine (early morning sun is okay).
- Avoid west-facing placement, as fuchsias don’t tolerate full sun.
- Keep in shade when temps hit 80+
What about watering?
- Water while your plant is hanging, for proper drainage.
- Water until the soil is evenly moist but not wet.
- As temps warm, your fuchsia will “drink” more & require daily watering.
- When to water: After you’ve fully watered your fuchsia, get a feel for the full basket’s “weight” by lifting up on the pot’s bottom. Water when the basket feels light, or when the first inch of soil is dry.
How do I keep it lush & bursting with blooms?
- If possible, use fertilizer at half-strength in every watering.
- Otherwise, fertilize every two weeks & only fertilize when soil is damp to avoid burning it.
- Pinch off the last ½ inch tip of each stem to promote new flower-bearing shoots.
PREPARE FOR DORMANCY
- Discontinue fertilizing during late summer.
- Bring fuchsia indoors where temps are 45 to 55 degrees, like a basement or garage.
- Darkness is okay—minimal sunlight is required during dormancy.
- Water once every three or four weeks.
- It’ll lose its leaves & look dead, but it’s not!
SPRING AWAKENING
- Take fuchsia out of storage in mid-February, or a month before the last frost date.
- Cut all branches on the plant back by half.
- Keep inside away from direct sunlight but in bright, filtered light.
- Begin regular watering, keeping soil moist but not wet.
- After the last frost date passes, hang your fuchsia in a shady area outside.
