Also called a winter rose or Christmas rose, this shade-loving evergreen is actually part of the buttercup family. Establish new plants in partially shaded rich, loamy, well-draining soil. Keep evenly watered during especially dry summers. Hellebore tends to thrive in neutral to alkaline soil—for soils with a pH <7.0, amend with lime in fall. Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring. Don’t prune back for winter.
